In Somerset, England, a heroin case is underscoring just how quickly a relationship can turn deadly.

In less than three months, 29-year-old Olivia Wood went from new girlfriend to murder victim.

Now the man she briefly dated, 33-year-old Kieran Goodwin, has been convicted of her murder and will spend at least 35 years behind bars.

Goodwin was Olivia's boyfriend of just a few months when he strangled her on July 30th,

2004. The very night she packed her bags to leave him. This week, a judge in Bristol

Crown Court sentenced Goodwin to life in prison for murdering the young woman who tried to break

free of his control. Investigators say Goodwin's behavior turned controlling almost as soon as the

relationship began. Within weeks, he launched a campaign of physical and psychological abuse.

He isolated Olivia and coerced her in disturbing ways, forcing her to take cocaine,

pressuring her to have sex with another man, and making her perform sex acts on camera for strangers.

Olivia confided in no one at the time, though notes later found on her phone showed she was

deeply unhappy. Goodwin also exploited Olivia's compassion by threatening to harm himself if she ever

left. God, I hate that manipulative act. We've seen it on so many of our cases.

He drained her finances too. Olivia gave him more than 6,000 pounds to pay his bills, money he

instead spent on drugs. By late July, Olivia had decided she'd had enough. She packed a suitcase

with her clothes and toiletries planning to walk out. But before she could,

Goodwin gave her a large dose of cocaine and then strangled her to death. At 250 a.m. on July 30th,

Goodwin dialed 999 claiming Olivia wasn't breathing. Paramedics found her unresponsive in his

flat and rushed her to the hospital. She died later that day with
