Summary

Did you know there are 8.6 million dedicated members of the Watchtower Society or Jehovah’s Witnesses, and supposedly, over 20 million people attend their annual big meeting (memorial attendance) worldwide? They are out on street corners, travel terminals in pairs. When I heard about a new book in Portuguese by a former elder, I wanted to learn more. António's new book, The Universe of Destructive Sects – Discover the secret world of deception, manipulation and mind control, explores the deepest secrets of the human mind and uncovers the manipulative techniques behind cults and high-control groups. António Madaleno’s journey from a dedicated Jehovah’s Witness elder to a vocal advocate against the Watchtower Society’s control tactics is a powerful story of courage and resilience. In this week’s episode of The Influence Continuum, we spoke about his transformative story and the impact of his work. Learn more about Steven Hassan and Freedom of Mind Resource Center. getting letters, way back when there was no internet, by the way. And I started getting letters

from former members, former elders of the Watchtower Society, Jehovah's Witnesses. We loved your book.

How come you didn't mention us?

0:57.2

And I said, why should I have mentioned the Jehovah's Witnesses?

1:01.3

And in particular, Randall Waters, who was Bethel Elder, head of publication, said,

are you kidding me?

1:09.3

I underlined the entire book. And I went, oh,

1:12.9

teach me. He said, come to Los Angeles. I'll bring you all of, you know, these ex-members and

1:19.6

will teach you, and you'll do a workshop with us. And I did. And it's, I've learned more and more and

1:27.3

more over the years about this group that was

1:29.9

started in the 1800s. We'll get into that, but let me introduce you and your book in Portuguese,

1:36.0

which is very exciting to me. So Antonio Madaleno was born in Lisbon in 1973 and was raised at JW, a Jehovah's Witness. After abandoning the

cult, he entered the psychology of the Autonomous University of Lisbon. As a student, he participated in

writing the article, the psychology of sects and groups that use destructive

social influence and its impact on its lives of its members, which was considered for publication

in the college magazine, Psyche. Over the years, he's written many online articles about the

doctrines and practices of the Jehovah's Witnesses,
