A political battle intensifies over control of Virginia's public colleges

as Democrats in the state Senate moved to fire 22 of Governor Glenn Yonkin's board appointees,

a dispute that's heading to the state Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Education Department demands an apology from the president of George Mason University,

accusing him of diversity initiatives that violated civil rights law.

A committee of the Virginia State Senate last week, controlled by Democrats,

held a brief meeting to reject out of hand 14 of Republican Governor Glenn Yonkin's

appointees to the boards of the University

of Virginia, George Mason, and the Virginia Military Institute. That's on top of eight nominees

that the committee voted down in June. This comes a bit controversy over the school's policies

on diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI.

The president of the University of Virginia recently stepped down under pressure from the Trump

administration, and there have been rumors of an effort perhaps to oust George Mason's president

Gregory Washington.
