Little Nelly Meeks, a pretty child, seven years old,

tells a graphic story of the murder.

She says that her parents were trying to move that night from Myland, Missouri where they lived.

But where they were going, she did not know.

They did not go to bed that night, but bundled up their clothes to get ready to go.

The little girl says she went to sleep.

Some time in the night someone came and told her pa they were ready to start.

Her mother took a bundle of clothes and her papa carried the baby,

and they walked to the outskirts of the town,

where they found a man with a wagon, which they got into. The two were riding on a spring

seat, the Meeks family riding in some hay back of the seat, the older of the two men, as she

describes them, driving the team. After they had been traveling, she didn't know how far, and were going up a hill, the

younger of the two men, the smooth-faced one, said his feet were cold and he must get out

and walk. He got out before the team and walked a short distance, and then got back even with

the wagon and said a few words to her

papa. He then thrust a revolver against his neck and fired, and her father fell out of the wagon.

Her mama screamed and begged for mercy, but the man shot her and one of the little girls and then beat

the other two over their heads. Nellie says she remembers them kicking her and saying they were all

dead. She did not know anything more until they were putting them in the straw stack when

she realized they were being buried, but for a time she could not move nor speak.

She said, When the man with the whiskers kicked me, I could not speak.
