It was dark.

Nearly 9 o'clock on the night of February 19th, 1838.

When 18-year-old Jane Alsop heard an urgent ringing of the bell at the gate outside her family's home.

Opening the door and squinting her eyes, she made out the form of a man on the other side of the gate, wearing a large cloak.

His face hidden and screwed up on the darkness.

Please sir, do not ring so loudly, she pleaded with the stranger in hushed tones.

Speaking in a rushed manner, the man in shadows beyond the gate told her that he was with the police.

And then demanded, for God's sake, bring me a light, for we have caught Spring Hill Jack here in the lane.

Jane disappeared into the dark recesses of the house, and quickly reemerged with the candle.

As soon as she opened the gate and handed the candle to the mysterious man, he threw off his cloak and brought the candle to his face.

And there, she saw what she would later describe as a most hideous and frightful appearance.

Perched on his head was a large helmet, and his body wrapped in tight fabric, resembling white oil skin.
