Hello, today's books take us deep into the heart of France, along the avenues of Manhattan, and on the road to Wigan Pier.

Murthy, whose journalistic assignments, including for the documentary series Unreported World,

have taken him all over the globe. Just recently, for instance, you may have seen him

reporting from Lesbos on the arrival there are boatloads of refugees. With Krishna, the author

Anne Cleves,

whose Shetland and Vera's stand-up crime novels

have both been made into popular TV dramas.

Her latest Vera novel, which came out this summer,

is The Mothcatcher.

And just two weeks ago,

she published a non-fiction book on Shetland.

And still found time to do some reading, Anne.

What's your choice of a good read?

I've chosen The Lost Estate by Alan Fournier,

and people might know it better by its French name,

which is Le Gronde Mone,

because I think lots of people of my generation did it

a six-form set text,

and that's certainly where I first came across it.
