A while back, my wife George and I attended a get-together thrown by the

Association of the Building that we live in, South Beach Miami. We had newly

designated our South Beach home as our primary residence.

So being new to town, we didn't know many people.

Check that.

We knew nearly nobody in the building but the concierrs

and the other staff members who were all busy working the party.

So George and I found ourselves just standing in the middle of this gathering, talking only to ourselves,

and looking around awkwardly at everybody else engaged in gregarious conversation.

And after a little while we started to feel, well, kind of lame.

Then this lovely couple came up and introduced themselves.

The husband Elliot said,

you look like the kind of couple we'd like to meet and said hello.

We ended up chatting with them for the next hour.

Elliot and his wife Julie were delightful,

or delightful, since we have become really good friends and visit each other

frequently in both Miami Beach and in California where we both also reside.

So reflecting on the situation later, I realized we would have never met this

fantastic couple and we might have gone on feeling lame just standing in a room full

of others having a great time if the husband Elliot had not gone first.
