Summary

In this podcast episode, James talks to our producer Jay Yow about the show's first ten years, James' experience with interviewing before starting the podcast, and his podcast goals for the next decade. This conversation comes after James has conducted 1300 interviews over nearly a decade.James has a rich and varied background in media and entertainment, which has informed his approach to podcasting. Prior to launching his show, James worked at HBO, where he developed and produced the web series "3 AM." This project, which followed the lives of New York City night owls, was ahead of its time and was an early example of the kind of storytelling that would come to define podcasting. After leaving HBO, James went on to help other creators launch successful podcasts, including Tim Ferriss, whose show has become one of the most popular and influential podcasts in the world. James' experience with Ferriss helped inform the importance of having a strong point of view and being willing to take risks to create something truly unique.Throughout his career as a podcast host, James has had his share of fears and favorite moments. He admits that it can be nerve-wracking to interview high-profile guests or tackle sensitive topics, but he also finds great joy in the process of discovery and the opportunity to share fascinating stories with his audience. Some of his favorite moments as a host include the times when he has been surprised by the insights or perspectives of his guests, or when he has been able to cultivate friendships with his interviewees such as chess legend Garry Kasparov.Despite the challenges and uncertainties of the industry, James remains passionate about podcasting and is excited to see where the medium will go in the years to come. His experience and perspective have helped him to create a show that is both entertaining and insightful, and he continues to push himself to take risks and explore new avenues of storytelling. What do YOU think of the show? It's been almost 10 years since I've started this podcast and first off, I'm going to

0:24.8

recommend that everybody start a podcast or at least have the philosophy I did when I

0:28.5

started this, which is I didn't want anyone else to give me a show.

0:34.1

For 20 years, I've been pitching like TV shows, radio shows, all kinds of shows.

0:41.4

And it's really hard to pitch a TV show.

0:44.6

It's really, you get in a room with a bunch of, I'm going to say it, not very bright people.

0:51.0

Actually, I shouldn't say that.

0:52.4

Some of them probably are very bright, but they're also scared.

0:56.4

They're scared of taking on, they're off taking risks that are going to get them fired.

1:01.5

Everybody in the TV business, and look, I worked in the TV business.

1:04.2

I worked at HBO for several years.

1:06.5

And again, I've had experience pitching shows to every single network in the world.

1:11.8

And they always say we want to do something new.

1:14.5

We want to be the first to do something new.

1:15.8

We want to take risks.

1:17.6

And then at the end of the day, nobody wants to do anything new and nobody wants to take

1:22.4

any risks.

1:23.7

And so, and ever since I was a kid, I love the idea of having an interview show, of being

1:30.0

like a talk show host.

1:32.2

I mean, I loved it.
