Summary

Welcome to Ask Paul Tripp, a weekly podcast from Paul Tripp Ministries where pastor and best-selling author Dr. Paul David Tripp answers your questions, connecting the transforming power of Jesus Christ to everyday life.

This week, Paul responds to a question from Jim, who was reading New Morning Mercies and took issue with Paul’s use of the word idol in the August 3rd entry. Jim argues that Scripture uses the term literally, so is it appropriate for Paul to use it metaphorically?

Paul, today's question comes from Jim, who is reading New Morning Mercies for the first time,

0:07.5

and he has a bone to pick with you about the August 3rd entry. He was just introduced to you

0:12.5

and this devotional by his friend, and he's very grateful for it, but in reading it with

0:16.7

his friend, it triggered a conversation about the word idol. Your August 3rd entry begins with

0:22.1

this. The purpose of the cross is to completely decimate your loyalty to the most seductive

0:28.2

and powerful of all idols, the idol of self. Again, Jim wants to express his gratitude and respect

0:35.1

for you, but he is not okay with the way that you use the word

0:38.2

idol, and it's not just you. He says it's many modern preachers and Bible teachers who use the

0:44.2

word idol metaphorically, and Jim's interpretation is that scripture only uses the word idle to

0:49.6

describe a physical object. He believes that the correct methodology for interpreting the Bible is that we

0:55.5

should read it literally, that is, with a natural, literal sense of the language, taking into

1:01.1

consideration the genre and context. He says, the Bible teaches that idols are physical objects.

1:07.6

This current teaching reaches beyond that. So if someone can give a new meaning to

1:12.6

one biblical term, what stops someone else from creating meanings for other terms? What hermeneutical

1:19.0

principles protect us from error here? So questions for you, Paul, are both about your definition

1:25.6

and use of the word idol specifically, but then

1:28.2

more broadly about hermeneutics and a literal or metaphorical, biblical method of interpretation.

1:35.0

Well, in answering this question, I want to say that I actually like being taken to task

1:43.4

for something I speak or right.

1:48.4

I think that I will never get it right till I'm on the other side.

1:54.9

I am very aware that I'm still learning.

1:58.0

I'm a student of God's Word.
