Summary
The government's has refused to learn from its catastrophic mistakes - and it's not looking good. The so-called Delta variant - which originated in India - is now dominant and positive cases have surged by over 46% in a week. Will the mass vaccination programme stop a new surge in hospitalisations and death - or are we heading not just for a delay of 'freedom day', but the reimposition of restrictions?
Joining me is Professor Deenan Pillay from Independent SAGE - and James Meadway, Director of the Progressive Economy Forum, to talk about the economic and political consequences of COVID-19.

| 0:00.0 | Hello, hello, hello, hope you're doing very, very well. Hello, darkness, my old friend, |
| 0:11.6 | I've come to talk with you again. Are we going through the same, not the same nightmare, |
| 0:16.2 | which we'll talk about, that we've gone through over the last well over a year now, |
| 0:20.8 | that should we be worried about the way things are heading with COVID-19. Now, |
| 0:27.6 | fun just looking right now at the official government dashboard. |
| 0:32.0 | In the last week, cases have gone up by 46.2%. The Delta variant, which we originally called |
| 0:42.1 | the Indian variant, but now the new system, rightly, is Alphabet. I mean, it's optimistic, |
| 0:46.9 | they think there's only going to be 26 of these variants. But nonetheless, the Delta variant |
| 0:51.4 | has now become the dominant variant in Britain. Now, this only was at first identified two |
| 0:57.6 | months ago in this country. The government failed to put it on the red list because they wanted |
| 1:03.6 | to negotiate a trade deal with India and Boris Johnson, of course, was visiting India or planning, |
| 1:09.6 | he didn't in the end, in order to negotiate that trade deal. Continuing the general |
| 1:14.4 | three of this government, a completely self-destructive on its own terms approach, which is |
| 1:22.0 | that a false dichotomy of the public health crisis or the economy, that if you, if we |
| 1:31.1 | lockdown, it will damage the economy and we can't be having that, which is why we delayed lockdown, |
| 1:36.8 | not once, not twice, but three times, all three times. And in the end, of course, what actually |
| 1:42.4 | happens is you were, you went up the worst of all worlds because the threat to the economy is the |
| 1:46.6 | public health crisis, the virus. If you crush the virus as other countries have done much more |
| 1:52.5 | effectively, then you have less economic consequences. We've got one of the worst economic |
| 1:56.8 | consequences, one of the worst death tolls on earth. And the same went with the Delta variant, |
| 2:02.2 | that because they thought a trade deal was in the offing and they didn't want to damage the |
| 2:07.3 | prospects of that trade deal, they didn't put India on the red list. And as a consequence, |
