Hi there, I wanted to open this episode with a new intro,

telling you that while this episode circles around a theory of

criminology the Broken Windows theory that has what I think is a pretty great metaphor for our own lives.

Since the publishing of this episode, it has been brought to my attention that the history of the Broken Windows theory is a pretty

tangled racist history. The criminologists who created this theory maybe didn't have racism on their minds,

but the way that it has been used and put into practice in cities, especially inner cities,

in areas predominantly... in cities,

in areas predominantly inhabited by people of color, basically gave law enforcement officers

a free pass to frisk and arrest young black boys and people of color in

these inner city communities using the Broken Windows Theory as the basis for their being there in the

community. As a result, a hugely disproportionate amount of black young men and young men of color have been inappropriately and in some cases

totally unjustly arrested, convicted, and incarcerated.
