today we have an armistice day remembered special looking at how Chelsea

Football Club was affected by the 1914-18 War. The so-called Water End on Wars.

In a while we're here from X-Men City by Paul Lake, telling the story of his

great Uncle George who played for Chelsea and was killed in a battle just

before the ceasefire. But first I think a lot of listeners will be unaware of

some of the fascinating other World War One related tales that we have to tell.

I think you're right Gary and it is a tragic but also intriguing period in the

club's history. Some of the things involving us are quite unique and we'll

reveal how football carried on despite the bloodshed. What Chelsea did to convince

volunteers to join up and how the club tried to boost the morale of those

enduring all four conditions in the trenches. Well it's been a long tradition

that on the match closest to 11 November football clubs commemorate the

1918 armistice to brought an end to the death and destruction of World War

One. It has and we've just had that upstand for bridge and Chelsea do this

very well. I mean usually involved in the Chelsea pensioners from down the

road at the Royal Hospital you know the veterans home with a scarlet jacket

they took part as always and it represents a moment of quiet contemplation

just before the game kicks off with that massive roar of release.
