let's get started. Welcome, everyone. Today we're talking about nine things to consider before teaching chores.

So teaching our children life skills, like how to do chores, is a great thing.

We want them to feel confident and prepared, whether that's to live independently or with support.

You may be thinking, Holly, that sounds amazing, but my child

doesn't like to do chores or they have a meltdown when I ask them to do a chore. I hear you.

And we're going to chat about why chores often fail and how to get curious with questions in order to set your child up for

success. Number one, put your own childhood experience with chores to the side. Now, I know this

isn't easy. When my child is resisting a chore, sometimes the first thing that pops up in my

head is, well, when I was your age, I mowed the grass and I vacuumed and I cleaned the kitchen

every night, blah, blah, blah, not hopeful. My children are not me. And your child is not you. So if you find these thoughts

coming up for you, join the club, we all experience this. But take a breath because it's not

best to bring these things up. It only upsets you and it makes your child feel bad.

Number two, a big reason why big feelings come up around chores is they can be overwhelming.

You know, I definitely feel that way too. I don't want to do chores in all honesty.

And if your child is showing you that they are having big feelings in their body, you know,

they may be saying things like, I'll never get it done. This will take forever. This is too hard.

I can't do it. Or maybe you just get a simple no or I'll do it later.

They are showing you that they're feeling overwhelmed or confused or they're having a transition

difficulty. So remember, children with neurological differences are more likely to struggle
