Job growth surged in November as the US economy added 227,000 positions. That's a lot more than the 36,000 from the

month before. But the rebound was expected, because October's data was distorted after back-to-back hurricanes and workers' strikes.

The unemployment rate ticked up from 4.1 to 4.2%.

It comes after claims for unemployment benefits increased more than expected last week,

to their highest level since mid-October. But the level of claims remained fairly steady, an indication

of a slowing but stable labour market. President-elect Donald Trump's allies are scrambling to save

Pete Heggseth after he struggled to win over sceptical Republicans in a flurry of meetings on Capitol

Hill this week. His confirmation as Defense Secretary is in jeopardy, amid a series of excessive drinking

and sexual misconduct allegations.

Accusations he denies.

A source has told CNN that Trump is still standing by his choice to lead the Pentagon,

telling Hegsef he wants to see him fight for votes in the Senate.

And Hegsirth says that's exactly what he plans to do.
