As pressure mounts over the migrant crisis at the U.S. Mexico border, U.S. officials are heading

to Mexico City for highly anticipated talks.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinckin and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Meyorkus

will meet with Mexico's president today.

This meeting comes just a week after the Mexican president and President Joe Biden spoke

on the phone about the issue, agreeing that more enforcement was urgently needed, so key ports of entry could be reopened.

Federal authorities reported a seven-day average of more than 9.5,000 migrant

encounters along the US Southern border in December.

And CNN has learned some 11,000 people are stuck in camps and shelters in northern Mexico,

waiting on appointments to claim asylum in the U.S.

CNN's Priscilla Alvarez has more on what the US wants to get out of today's talks.

The urgency of the moment is clear by who is heading down to Mexico today.
