Tropical Storm Helene is now battering Georgia and heading north.

After it made landfall as a category 4 hurricane in Florida last night.

This is the strongest hurricane on record to slam into Florida's big bend, unleashing

life-threatening storm surge, flooding rainfall, and destructive

winds overnight.

The storm could cause power outages that the National Weather Service says will likely last

days, if not weeks. Along Florida's coast, record-breaking storm surge

levels are also being seen. In Cedar Key, it reached a record level of 9.29 feet with the local fire rescue saying the place is

quote probably going to be changed forever. This resident there spoke to

CNN last night. I know of at least a half dozen, maybe 10 elderly people

that just refuse to leave.

The minute that it's safe enough to get out there,

we're gonna go start trying to pull people off roofs

and hopefully their lives people and not bodies.

I stayed to help my island as best I could.

I think it'll be days and days before anyone from the outside can get here.

Although Helene has now weakened to a tropical storm,

it doesn't mean it's over,

as watches and warnings are in place

for 60 million people in 12 states.
