Hello from CNN, I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Friday, January 17th.

Israel's security cabinet has approved the ceasefire and hostage release deal. And if the full cabinet ratifies it later today, Israel's Prime Minister's office says the first group of hostages being held by Hamas could be released as early as Sunday.

Under the deal, Hamas and its allied militant groups

will release 33 hostages, three of them Americans. The group also includes female soldiers,

children, the elderly and the sick. In return, Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners

and aid will be increased into Gaza. For the families of the

hostages, like the parent of American Eden Alexander, it's a nerve-wracking weight.

It's very emotional to know that the deal is coming. We are not sure that our son is in the

list and we don't know when we are going to see him.

Meanwhile, Gaza's civil defense says more than 100 people have been killed by Israeli strikes following Wednesday's announcements, including at least 27 children.

President Joe Biden has commuted sentences for almost 2,500 nonviolent drug offenders convicted on crack cocaine

related charges. He said they were serving, quote, disproportionately long sentences,

compared to what they'd get under the current law. People who committed crack cocaine-related

crimes used to get harsher sentences than people

charged with powder cocaine offenses.

But the law was changed to try to reduce racial disparities.
