So my guest today is David L. Eulen, author of a new novel called Thirteen Question Method.

0:43.0

I think I said at the beginning, I wanted to write a book that was an existential thriller.

0:46.5

Part of the existential question, well, one of the existential questions in the book is the existential

0:51.7

question of the city itself. And so I, you know, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, it's a earthquake, because that would be, you know, it could be, it's catastrophic also, but there's the jolt and then it's the aftermath. The same, I think, with flooding in a certain way, drought is more of an ongoing like like a chronic illness, let's say. But wildfire, especially a big wildfire threatening neighborhoods, is acute. And we all know from having lived through it, you know, you're paying attention to the wind, and what's the, you know, if there's Santa Ana conditions, when are they going to die down, and how much of the fire is contained? Like, we all know this language of, you know, you know, a fire, wildfire and wildfire containment and all

1:29.3

of that.

1:30.3

So that seemed also like a rich territory to kind of explore, as I say, to kind of amp up the stakes,

1:36.3

but also to look into the existential question of Los Angeles itself.

1:40.3

All right, that was David L. Yulin. His new novel is called 13 Question Method, available from Outpost 19.

1:53.1

This is a wonderful work of noir fiction, set in contemporary Hollywood, and inspired by the work of writers like James M. Kane and Albert Camus.

2:08.3

It is a gripping and gritty psychological thriller about a down and out anti-hero

2:15.5

reeling from a divorce who gets caught up in the affairs of his neighbor

2:22.3

and finds himself in the middle of an inheritance dispute.

2:28.3

I had a great time reading, 13 question method and talking with David L. Yulin. That conversation is coming up in just a couple of minutes.
