Summary

Tish Harrison Warren is the real deal. Super raw, super wise, down to earth, yet can hang in the loftiest ivory towers. Tish is a priest in the Anglican Church in North America. She is the author of Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life, which was Christianity Today's 2018 Book of the Year, and the forthcoming Prayer in the Night: For Those Who Work, or Watch, or Weep (IVP, 2021). These two books form the backbone of our conversation, and toward the end of the podcast we get super raw and real about the problem of evil and stuff.

Tish has worked in ministry settings for over a decade as a campus minister with InterVarsity Graduate and Faculty Ministries, as an associate rector, with addicts and those in poverty through various churches and non-profit organizations, and, most recently, as the writer-in-residence at Church of the Ascension in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is a monthly columnist with Christianity Today, and her articles and essays have appeared in the New York Times, Religion News Service, Christianity Today, Comment Magazine, The Point Magazine, and elsewhere. She is a founding member of The Pelican Project and a Senior Fellow with the Trinity Forum. She lives with her husband and three children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Hello, friends. Welcome back to another episode of Theology in the ROM. My name is Preston Sprinkle.

0:04.2

I'm the host for today's show. And on today's show, my guest is Tish Harrison Warren.

0:13.1

Tish Warren is a priest in the Anglican Church in North America. She's the author of an

0:18.0

incredible book, Liturgy of the Ordinary Sacred Practices in Everyday Life, which, as we

0:24.2

talked about in the podcast, won the Christianity Today's Book Award for 2018, which is a huge

0:32.1

accomplishment. There's a lot of books that are up for winning that award and Tish's Book

0:37.2

won it in 2018. She also is the author of the forthcoming book, depending on when I release this,

0:43.6

it might actually, it might already be out. It's called Prayer in the Night for those who work,

0:50.5

watch or weep by inter-intervarsity press, both of the books are by IVP. So Tish's, she's a

0:59.3

fascinating individual super thoughtful, super down the earth. And I just, every time she speaks,

1:06.6

she just oozes wisdom and humor. That's why she's a very well-rounded person, as you'll see.

1:14.3

In this conversation, our talk is centered on her two books, but her two books have such

1:23.7

interesting themes that we'll get into. And so we go on some tangents and we unpack some things

1:29.2

related to those themes. We end the podcast. I really encourage you to listen all the way to the end

1:34.6

or if you're on YouTube, watch all the way to the end, because towards the end, we talk about

1:39.1

the Odyssey, the problem of evil. And her second book, Prayer in the Night, deals with that,

1:44.4

and it flows out of her own personal journey. And it's, I think the last, honestly, I feel like the

1:49.4

last 10 or 15 minutes of our conversation was probably the most raw and real and meaningful.

1:55.5

The whole thing was meaningful, but I mean, I kind of started opening up lots of cans of worms.

2:02.1

So I hope you enjoy this episode. I'm sure you will. Also, if you want to support the show,
