Today on the program, my guest is Ivy Piccota, author of a new novel called Sing Her Down.

I wrote the last part that I was like,

I want to figure out how these women get to this point.

That's all I knew.

I knew that I wanted this sort of standoff on Western.

That's not giving anything away.

I wanted this sort of Wild West standoff on Western.

And then I knew that these women were going to be in prison.

And then I had to figure out how to get them there, and I just had a few, few ideas.

The plotting of it was, how do we get them to this point? Like, what would it take for these two women to wind up in that situation?

And that was the question I kept asking myself.

All right, that was Ivy Picota. Her new novel is called Sing Her Down.

Sing Her Down reads like an incantation.

It's a very musical book. This is a novel that really moves. It is a contemporary Western set primarily in Los Angeles. It is a crime story. It is about a pursuit. It is a story

about women. Two women in particular, and what happens to them as they serve time in prison, and what happens when they get out.

This is also very much, to me anyway, a pandemic novel, a book that speaks to the era that we just lived through and in some

ways continue to live through. But it does this without being too like on the nose about it.
