author of a new All Ages novel entitled The Eyes and the Impossible. I prefer to write a kind of a catapulting breathless style.

It makes me feel alive and me feel free and it contrasts the fact that you are sitting

for eight hours at a stretch in this weirdly sedentary profession.

So after writing this I thought like, well, why write any other way?

You know, I struggle with it all the time because there are forms of storytelling where you do need

a more sober, tonally neutral way of writing where you're getting out of the way of the story.

Like writing nonfiction, usually I'm trying to just disappear as a narrator and let the story

emerge. But as a writer, it's a lot less fun, you know.

All right. That was Dave Eggers, bestselling author, publisher, founder of McSweeney's, co-founder of the literary non-profit 826, Valencia.

Dave Eggers has written a new all-ages novel. It is called The Eyes and the Impossible, available from McSweeney's in a deluxe, limited limited edition woodbound hardcover.

It's really beautiful.

The book is also available in a more traditional style hardcover from Knappf books for young readers.

The Eyes and the Impossible is the story of a dog named Johannes, who lives in a park and who serves on behalf of the other

animals as the eyes of the park, helping to keep track of what is going on, helping to maintain

what is called in the world of this story, the equilibrium. The Eyes in the Impossible is whimsical, fantastical,

often very funny, moving. It's a beautifully written book that also features wonderful

illustrations by Sean Harris. I'm very happy to have had the chance to talk with Dave Eggers.
