Hello, I'm Eddie Mayer and this is the Grenfell Tower Inquiry podcast, reporting every day the inquiry sits.

The inquiry had evidence from two witnesses today who lived on the upper floors of the tower.

Nicholas Burton lived in flat 165 on the 19th floor with his wife Maria del Pillar Burton, known to her friends as Pilly.

Pilly had dementia and was physically frail.

Her condition had got progressively worse over the two years before the fire.

On the 14th of June 2017, Nicholas and Pilly were at home.

The dog, a beagle called Lewis Hamilton II, was in the

living room with them. Between 120 and 130, Nicholas Burton was woken by a loud banging on the front door.

He went to investigate. He told lead counsel to the inquiry Richard Millett that when he opened the

door, he was faced with thick black smoke.

I was in shock when I opened the door because I couldn't see anything.

I have a, there's a wall, just a meter or a meter and a half.

In front of it, usually a white wall, which is the encasing of the lift.

And I couldn't even see that.

It was just total darkness and the smoke just came rushing into the flat.

Nicholas Burton slammed the door shut

after a couple of seconds.

He noted a slight burning smell.

Nicholas woke Pilly and put some towels

around the front door.
