Summary

The Labour party is in turmoil after mostly disastrous election results in England and Scotland. Devoid of a vision, the leadership is preparing to attack the left.

How can Labour be saved - or can it? Joining me are former Shadow Cabinet ministers John McDonnell and Jon Trickett, Labour MPs Kim Johnson and Nadia Whittome - while Preston Council Labour leader Matthew Brown explains how they bucked the national trend with radical policies.

Welcome to the show, Blimey. We're to begin. The Labour Party has been plunged into chaos

0:15.1

for multiple reasons. I suppose the most recent reason is that the leader of the Labour

0:20.8

Party and his team have had sacked the party chair, the deputy leader Angelina and attempt

0:26.1

to scapego her for the disastrous failings of Keir Starmer and his team in the elections

0:32.6

this week. They also have the ice pick out for various other people. It's not entirely

0:37.1

sure where the so-called re-tourful matter is because of the chaos that has enveloped Labour's

0:42.5

top operation. Now, we've got a very stellar line up today to talk about, I think what is a

0:49.9

pretty big moment in Labour history. I think this is a what on the verge of some sort of turning point

0:56.4

about where the Labour Party goes, about the battle for the soul, the heart and soul of a party that

1:03.0

was founded 120 years ago to represent the interests of working people in this country. Now,

1:08.4

of course, we saw last week the terrible results in Hartlepool, a seat which, of course,

1:14.4

was held by the Labour Party under its predecessor, Keir Starmer's predecessor, it's not less than

1:20.0

four years ago, when over half of the electorate in Hartlepool voted for the Labour Party, even though

1:25.2

back in 2015, it was a more marginal seat for the Labour Party than it was in 2019, when less people

1:31.2

voted for the Brexit Party in 2019 than had voted for UKIP in 2015. And yet, of course, Labour

1:36.3

managed to take that vote, or much of it in 2017, this time round, not only did Labour lose votes

1:42.8

to other parties, but their own vote collapsed as Labour voters did not come out to vote in Hartlepool.

1:48.4

We've seen across the country, of course, Labour losing council seats, that there have been

1:54.3

positives, which we're also going to talk about, because I think there are lessons to be learned,

1:58.5

not least in Wales, under the leadership of Mark Drakeford, but also, for example, Andy Burnham

2:04.8

in Manchester, Siddi Kahn in London, and local examples like Solford and Preston, where Labour

2:11.5

parties with radical leaderships and radical policies, which are actually given incentive for
