On Saturday, June 15, 1991, the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century took place, Mount Pinatubo, in the Philippines.

In the shadow of Mount Pinatubo, towns and villages lie covered in a thick blanket of volcanic ash and mud.

The effects of this devastating eruption were felt far beyond the Philippines. The volcano pumped millions of tons of sulfur dioxide into that atmosphere.
