Okay, here's my question. Since it became really cold out, bitterly cold.

We've been noticing a lot of snaps or cracks in the house, particularly in the wee hours of the morning.

And I have a feeling it's from expansion and contraction, but my question is, what causes it? And is this a serious problem where I should have any concern?

Well, not only is it a serious problem, what's happening there is the double flanges on the joists are expanding the counterclockwise in the ice.

There have been occasions when people should leave their home depending on the... you have to time the frequency of the cracks.

It's almost like a pregnancy thing. You have to time the frequency of the cracks. If they're within, let's say, 30 seconds of each other.

I think you're looking at a night in a motel six.
