What would you say is the most important of all God's commands?

Jesus answered that question by saying,

love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul

and with all your mind and with all your strength.

Have you ever wondered what it means to love God and other people with your mind?

When we think of loving anyone, we usually think in terms of hearts and souls

and we might think about loving someone with all our strength too,

but according to Jesus, we should also love God with all our minds.

Well, how are we supposed to do that?

When we see the word mind in the New Testament,

it's usually the Greek word nows.

It's the part of us that perceives and understands.

It discerns between good and evil.

It's the God-given power to consider, to reflect, to judge soberly,

calmly and impartially.

So to love God with our nows, our minds,

is to love him by engaging with him intellectually and rationally.

The Lord doesn't want us to switch off our brains and just feel.

In fact, as it says in Isaiah chapter 1,

he says to his people,

come now, let us reason together.

So what does it look like practically to love God with our minds?
