Summary

In the fifth Caroline book, we learn that her fight song—her prove she’s alright song— is the Star-Spangled Banner. There’s no fire burning in her bones, but in this "saves the day" story, there is a lingering threat that Mama will torch the entire shipyard. Throughout Caroline’s Battle, three generations of women show that they are willing to step up and fight the British at almost any cost. As quick as you can say “ash on the breeze,” a scary confrontation with the enemy seems to fizzle out. We discuss Mama’s bookkeeping, Papa’s fragility, grandma’s weaponry, Francis Scott Key, and of course, other War of 1812 power ballads.

I have to present a very difficult choice to you.

0:03.6

Okay, I'm listening.

0:05.7

We've gone very musical with this maritime series, so I want to ask you to choose between

0:12.4

Whitney Houston's live star-spangled banner or any Dolly Parton recording of star-spangled banner

0:20.9

or a third choice. Like a third choice that's anything I would choose that's not that?

0:26.4

Correct. Oh my god.

0:29.8

Oh, this is tough. Listen, there is no version of the star-spangled banner that's better than

0:37.3

Whitney Houston's live recording, period full stop. However, as a separate conversation,

0:42.8

like I did listen to Dolly Parton's in the light of a clear room morning today and the

0:47.4

way to work. And I was like tears in my eyes driving on the bridge, which was not safe, but

0:52.2

it reaches me. So I don't know. It's like, ah, body of work. I'm picking Dolly, but star-spangled banner

0:58.0

I'm with Whitney. I'll take it.

1:12.1

I just, that's a hard one. I just remember saying, like looking at the star-spangled banner,

1:18.3

the actual thing at the Smithsonian for the first time. And I was like, wow, this is huge,

1:21.6

but also like why are we spending this much money to restore it?

1:25.2

That's not a thing to say, but I'm just saying, like, I love that flag.

1:30.8

Okay. When Tom Cruise said, I love this woman. I love that flag.

1:34.7

Is this going to come to a similar end as Tom Cruise in that woman?

1:38.8

Oh god. Okay. I can't wait to hear about this. All right. All right, everyone. Welcome to American Girls

1:46.6

The Podcast. This is this series where we're reliving the American Girl Series book by book.

1:51.6

I'm Mary. I'm still Allison. Starspangled Allison, perhaps. We'll see.

1:55.7

Starspangled Katie Homes. Perhaps Kate Homes, if you recall.
