I will also include an occasional red zone rant, but not today. In this episode, I want to talk about the power of soft answers. I'm not talking about soft people. In fact, I think it takes a strong

person to give a soft answer. There's a proverb that says a soft answer turns away wrath. In other words,

when someone attacks you, when someone reacts to you, when someone insults you, if you respond improperly,

you can escalate the situation, you're both out of your zone, it gets out of

control, and nothing good happens. But when you can slow them down with a soft answer, pause a couple

seconds and say, my goodness, I'm sorry you feel that way. What do you suggest we do to resolve it?

Or I didn't realize I was doing that. How do you suggest I can do better in that situation?

And you say it with the right

tone, the right pace, the right sincerity, the right inflection, you start to calm them and you down.

Soft answers disarm attackers. It keeps you in control. It keeps you on the high road. It preserves

your energy, your attitude, and your focus, and it leads to resolution rather

than to escalation.

So whether it's a teammate, a customer, a coworker, a family member, a stranger, whoever

attacks you or reacts to you or insults you, give the soft answer.

Stay in control.

Remember the game changer stays in their zone and controls their emotions.
