Summary

What can I plant in my garden to keep pests away?

Doesn't every organic gardener want to know this? We don't want to use pesticides, so we want to know what herbs deter pests, what flowers deter caterpillars, and what plants repel specific insects that plague our gardens.

While scientific research on the topic of companion planting for pest management is still in its infancy, blog posts, books, and articles abound with ideas. But what suggestions are based in science and which ones are based in old wives' tales?

In today's episode of the Beginner's Garden Podcast, I share 4 principles for using companion planting for organic pest control.

Music Hi there. Thank you for joining me today. Today's topic is a popular one, especially if my Pinterest feed is any indication. We're going to be talking about companion planting.

0:40.1

And this is also a topic that I've had a lot of you ask me about, especially inside my Facebook

0:45.6

group, The Beginners Garden Shortcut. It's one of those topics that keeps coming up over and over and over

0:51.3

again. I've actually been doing quite a bit of research on this subject

0:55.5

since I realized it was something that so many of you guys wanted to hear more about, and I realized

1:01.1

this is a big topic to tackle. And honestly, I had to choose which topic within the topic we

1:08.6

would talk about today, or else we might be here a very long time.

Companion planting is one of those things that you can learn so much about and honestly it's pretty

1:18.3

fun. I mean, think about it. Trying to plant different plants around other plants so that you can

1:24.3

have a more beneficial relationship between the plants. It's a lot of fun. And I got

1:30.3

really into it when I was first starting my garden. I was trying to figure out where to plant what

1:36.8

and what plants go together. And as if designing a garden layout is not like a puzzle already. Add companion planting in the mix,

1:45.9

and if you've ever tried it before, it can get a little bit overwhelming. And that's why I want to

1:51.3

begin this discussion by saying, don't overwhelm yourself. If this is your first time gardening,

1:57.9

or if you are a new gardener and you have a lot of different things you

2:01.5

want to plant, I would not worry too much about digging in the weeds, no pun intended,

2:08.2

in companion planting. Because there's just too much to have to consider and honestly,

2:13.0

there's not a whole lot of science to back up what you read online. Personally, I didn't want to hear

2:18.6

that. I wanted to hear that basil always goes with tomatoes or carrots are always supposed to be

2:24.8

planted near tomatoes. And here's why, because the science shows it. But honestly, there's just not a
