Summary

"I think often we confuse strategy with activity, and we can get stuck in this kind of flywheel of just like, well, I feel busy, I look busy. I did a lot of things today, but what did I actually accomplish?"

If you really want to build a successful speaking business, you have to follow the right processes — and be consistent in doing the little things well. Everyone wants to book more paid speaking gigs, but what are the simple, practical things that most speakers miss?

Dan Irvin knows a thing or two about building processes to scale your speaking business — in just a few years, he's gone from a full time corporate job to 60 paid gigs in 2023. This week, he's sitting down with Grant to share 7 strategies you can use right now in your speaking business to get more gigs.

No matter where you are as a speaker or how many gigs you've booked, you'll get something out of this episode to help you move to the next level.

"Find what can you do each and every day consistently, even if it's just one tiny little step that you can do every day versus these massive kind of leaps that I think people oftentimes want to create."

Hey, excited for today's conversation. We're going to be talking with one of our team members here, Mr. Dan Irvin. It's actually been with the company for four years now. In addition, the guy is killing it on his own as a speaker does a ton of gigs on the outside of this, but also works with a lot of our speakers. So excited to chat with him. We had him on back in episode 454. So if you're interested in that,

1:44.7

go check out that episode. But Dan, welcome back. How are you, man? I'm doing really well. I'm happy to be here. As I said, last time, I'll say it again. Anytime I can get some time with you, Grant, it's a good day. So I'm excited to be here with you. No pressure. I know we just hung out a couple months ago, you're down in the Dallas area. I'm in the Nashville area, but came down to spend some time with you and some other people in the area. Yeah, the feeling is mutual. So anytime we get to hang out together, it's a win for both of us, hopefully. So let's talk about this. So you went through our booked and paid to speak program several years ago. You were interested in speaking. And one of the things that's been really impressive is you are someone who has really broke through that ceiling of going from, hey, I'm booking a few gigs here and there to know, I'm consistently doing this, you know, kind of week in, week out. I have different gigs that are happening. So first of all, maybe kind of paint the picture of like, what does your speaking business look like now?

2:36.3

Like maybe get some context of how many gigs you're speaking at, who are you typically speaking to, and what are you speaking about? Sure. Yeah, I love to do that because it's pretty exciting and I'm enjoying every second of it. And so I'll share with you last year. I talked about this quite often. In 2023, I did just over 60 paid gigs. and a lot of people are like, man, that's a lot per month.

2:36.1

It doesn't work out that way, as you know. There's a heavier season and a lighter season,

2:40.7

but there's certainly seasons and months that I'm busier than others. This year, I'm going to do

2:45.3

probably half that, but I've doubled the fee, right? And so, uh, revenues are saying similar, uh,

2:52.4

but I'm actually, I feel like not only am I just intentionally kind of doing less gigs,

2:58.2

but I'm actually narrowing in on, uh, organizations, companies, associations that are just

3:03.9

a better fit for me. And so when I show up, not only am I connecting, I think,

3:10.3

at a much deeper level with these audiences, but I'm actually getting longer-term relationships
