0:00.0	Martha Beck. What happens when we lie? Oh my gosh, our whole physiology falls apart.
0:06.2	Why? Nobody's really sure except that it is to our evolutionary advantage that we keep our
0:12.1	ideas and our communication pretty much in line with what's going on in the neuroception of
0:17.1	our reality of our whole body. So, and this is why polygraph machines work. The moment you
0:23.3	lie, your blink rate goes up, your heart rate goes up, your hands start to perspire. Psychopaths can
0:28.8	beat it, but even for them, it's more complicated. The brain has to work really hard to devise a reality
0:34.7	that it knows is not true. So I used to, I'm a life coach and I believe that if something's supposed to be useful for
0:43.3	coaching lives, it has to work with any life.
0:46.9	So I used to coach homeless people on the streets of Phoenix, mostly heroin addicts.
0:53.8	And I would ask them things like, what do you love in your
0:58.0	life? They would be heroin. What makes you happy heroin? And yet, if I tested their muscle strength
1:06.1	by just pushing down on an arm while they said, I love heroin, they became incredibly weak. Their bodies knew
1:16.4	that they didn't love heroin, but their brains were completely addicted, right? And I would be,
1:23.2	I would be able to just, they were practically floppy when they were lying, and it scared them to
1:27.4	death because these were mainly guys right out of prison who relied on being, on fighting.
1:34.0	So it scared them.
1:35.5	And it scared me too.
1:36.6	That's how weak we get when we say or do anything that isn't right for us at the deepest level.
1:42.6	Why would that be happening?

1:46.6	I mean, I could make some guesses from intuition.
