If you go into a Catholic church, you'll very likely see a statue like this right here.

It's our Lord Jesus Christ, but the heart is not on the inside.

The heart is on the outside.

Now I wasn't raised to Catholic, I'm a Catholic now, and I got to admit this is one of the

peculiar devotions that people on the outside of Catholicism looking in see.

The ones would be, for example, infinite Prague, Mary and devotions, etc.

But this one, especially, is one that people object to or find strange, Protestant evangelicals

and Eastern Orthodox raise questions and feel uncomfortable about the sacred heart

devotion.

So today, I'm going to do a little bit of history and a little bit of theology, even

going back to the crusades.

It might be a connection that you've never made.

You probably always think sacred heart of Jesus goes back to St. Margaret Mary, but actually

it's a religious phenomenon.

It's a devotion that comes out of the environment of the crusade.

So I'm going to go over that today.

I'm going to go over some scripture and then just look at some of the emergence of sacred

heart devotion, especially in the 1200s after the crusades.

So again, you're looking at this picture.

And I would say, if you're an evangelical Protestant, you're not a Catholic, maybe you're

Eastern Orthodox.
