Summary

Sorceress. Confidant. Traitor. Sister. All of those words describe Morgan Le Fay, King Arthur's half-sister. She is by far the most complex character I've come across in the Arthurian legends, but she's constantly portrayed in the medieval and early modern texts as a one-note traitorous baddy who is evil because she's an evil sorceress and evil sorceresses are evil. If you're familiar with the legends, you're going to see a Morgan you've never seen before. If you're not, get ready to meet one of the most interesting, tragic figures you'll come across. Arthur's half-sister.

He'll learn that in an unnery is, I guess, a great place to learn necromancy, and that

0:11.3

if a middle-aged man offers to teach him magic lessons in the woods, well, I don't even

0:15.8

think I need to finish that sentence.

0:17.6

It sounds sketchy enough already.

0:19.5

The creature this week is a little red monster from Detroit, Michigan, who will fill your

0:23.5

life with doom, destruction, and really bad breath.

This is the Mythic and Legends podcast, episode 68A, Get the 2-Anunnery.

0:37.6

This is a podcast right off stories from mythology and folklore.

Some are incredibly popular stories you think you know, but with surprising origins.

0:48.4

Other stories you might have heard, but really should.

Today, we're back in the Arthurian Legends, but we're not really continuing from last

week, so if this is your first time hearing the podcast, feel free to jump in here.

Before we begin, I'm going to start this episode saying that I took some liberties with

1:03.2

the Morgan LaFay story.

1:04.9

The most coherent version is that of Sir Thomas Mallory, but one of his main sources,

1:09.6

was the 13th century French Volgate, which adds much more nuance and includes the whole

1:14.3

episode we're going to talk about today.

1:16.1

Basically, as with nearly every story in this podcast, there's no one official version.

1:21.4

The Arthurian Legends are basically just pseudo-historical supernatural fanfiction.

1:26.2

I merged all the versions I could to make the Morgan and the story today, and I'll
