but as winter set in, the pace of life began to pick up speed. The floodwaters which had covered the fields since August were receding now, and the fertile soil was being revealed once again.

Planting season was beginning, and the farmers were heading out into the fields to begin their work.

In the Nile Delta, that immense swath of greenery at the northern end of Egypt, many farmers were

heading out into the fields that belonged, technically, to the royal government.

Since the days of the old kingdom, the Delta had been fertile ground for the Crown to set up its estates.

Crop farms, orchards, vineyards, all the production facilities that go along with them.
