Summary

The story of the frog prince is well known - a beautiful princess meets a frog, kisses him, and he turns out to be a prince. Except, in the earliest version, it doesn't go like that at all. I won't spoil it, but the original frog prince is extremely bizarre, and I had the most fun writing it of any episode so far. The second story is of a frog princess, from Russian folklore, and not only is it a great story in its own right, with a stupid king and a ridiculous dating service, but we'll catch back up with our favorite witch living in a house on chicken legs and a certain deathless sorcerer early in his career. The creature of the week shoots hail out of its ears and kills anyone it sees...unless you're carrying a sack of llama fat. This week, on the Myths and Legends podcast, it's the earliest story of the frog prince,

0:05.2

and then one of a frog princess. You'll see why you shouldn't let your children play in the

dark forest. They might just bring home a slimy new best friend, and we'll see a medieval

0:14.8

dating service that takes Kubit's methods fairly literally and consists of shooting arrows

indiscriminately at potential matches. Then, on the creature of the week, it's a cat from the

0:25.2

Peruvian Highlands that enjoys dance walking up rainbows and shooting light in out of its eyes.

This is a podcast where I tell stories from mythology and folklore. Some are incredibly

0:49.5

popular stories you think you know, with surprising origins. Other stories you might not have heard,

0:54.2

but really should. The frog story is so well known that I completely wrote it off, even before

0:59.6

looking into it. I mean, a princess meets a frog, kisses him, and he turns into a handsome prince,

1:05.6

and they live happily ever after. Except, and I'm surprised I was surprised by this.

1:11.6

That's not the original story, the original, though brief, is hilariously bizarre. I loved it,

1:17.9

and something really unexpected happens. Then, we're going to talk about a story I've received a

1:22.7

lot of requests for, the frog princess. From the same collections as the stories of Bobby Yagah,

1:28.4

Ivan in the Wolf, Vasiliya Sothebeautiful, and the full-in-his-flying ship comes to the story of a

1:33.4

frog that was made princess. And not only is it a fun story, but we get to meet some of our old,

1:38.8

old friends from Slavic folklore. Anyway, the first story, that of the frog prince, was originally

1:44.7

collected by the Grim Brothers in the 1800s. There's Rich, and then there's your kid plays with

2:01.5

gold toys worth more than my house, Rich. The king was, not surprisingly, the second type of Rich,

2:07.9

and the princess took one of the golden balls to play out in the great Dark Forest. Despite a

2:13.2

young girl casually tossing a ball of a measurably high worth by herself, in the Dark Forest,
