Summary

Are you chronically underfed and overstressed? Most time-starved athletes are. In the context of our busy lives, the vast majority of us tend to undercut our calories relative to our training demands. Unfortunately, the cost of doing so is immense.

A random approach to nutrition and fueling leads to athletes who are frustrated with energy fluctuations, a lack of portion control, and lower training consistency. This confusion often leads to trying new things and falling prey to the latest eating evangelism.

In this episode. Matt shares his thoughts on post-workout fueling with Purple Patch athlete case studies. In each, these athletes have adopted certain eating habits that, inherently, aren’t bad, but can (and do) lead to decreased performance when not executed properly.

Through these examples, Matt outlines his quick tips on how to time your meals relative to the time of day you train, what types of foods to eat before and after training sessions, and warning signs to heed if you are struggling.

Ultimately, you want your nutrition and fueling to be anchored around pragmatism and repeatable habits.

Enjoy.

This is your host, Matt Dixon. And this week, we talk about fueling, particularly the power of

0:31.0

post-workout fueling. Now, I've talked about this subject before, but today we're going to go

0:35.9

deeper and broader. And the catalyst for

0:38.9

today's show actually stemmed from a very public conversation I had with an author who I both

0:43.9

greatly respect and enjoy their work. And we happen to be sharing a stage discussing recovery

0:49.2

when she made a strong statement to the audience. Listen, folks, you don't need to worry about refueling full in your workouts.

0:57.6

As long as you get enough protein throughout the day,

1:00.7

the research shows that protein synthesis or muscle rejuvenation

1:04.4

occurs with those calories just spread across the day.

1:07.7

So just focus on eating lots of protein and you'll be great. Well, in theory,

1:13.5

there's nothing wrong with that. And yet, my ears pricked up. What made me doubt the advice?

1:19.9

Advice that ultimately bubbles out of good research. She wasn't wrong, but in my opinion,

1:26.4

her advice was incorrect. Why? Well, my observations show that

1:31.4

simply following a device like this tends to lead to habits that seldom provides the results

1:36.6

we need, both in terms of optimal recovery and adaptation, but also in optimizing energy levels and

1:43.1

focus throughout the workday.

1:44.4

And second, our mission is always about execution for the athlete.

1:49.2

And while the research suggests that our muscles repair relative to daily global intake,

1:54.1

when we tend to put this into action, it's rare that I see that people are successful.

1:59.7

Life is busy.
