Episode 60, Henrietta Maria of France, the happiest and most fortunate of Queens.

Last week, we left Henrietta Maria after she had been defeated by the King's favourite,

the Duke of Buckingham, in a palace struggle over the makeup of her household.

In her marriage treaty, she had been guaranteed freedom to practice her Catholicism freely in Protestant England

and the right to be served exclusively by French men and women.

Charles's decision to side with Buckingham was not only a gross betrayal by her husband against his wife. It effectively marooned her

in a foreign land where she had few friends. It was a big come-down for an exalted princess of France,

let alone someone who was barely 16. In today's episode, we're going to look

at Henrietta's time as Queen from where we left off last time, up until when all hell breaks

loose at the start of the 1640s. Henrietta Maria was not one to flinch in a crisis, nor was she

someone who meekly accepted her fate. She may have had a terrible start
