Hi from CNN. This is Madeline Thompson, with five things you need to know for Thursday, January

So today I'm announcing that the federal government will cover 100% of the cost for 180 days.

This is going to pay for things like debris and hazard material removal, temporary shelters,

first responders' salaries, and all necessary measures to protect life and property.

That's President Joe Biden speaking today about the historic wildfires continuing to rage in Southern California. The blazes have postponed everything from Oscar nominations to

tonight's Lakers game, but many homeowners are already wondering what's next

for their destroyed property. The rising threat of these very disasters has led many insurance

companies to limit coverage in the large swaths of California at high risk for them. But for those

who do have coverage, the state's insurance commissioner Ricardo Lara spoke to CNN about how best to prepare for the wildfires aftermath.

What we're telling consumers are, make sure that they get a complete copy of their insurance policy,

that they take note of their additional living expenses, and that they track and get receipts for everything.

This also simplifies the claims process

and document every conversation they're having with their agent

or with their adjusters.

Unfortunately, this is a time when fraud becomes prevalent.

Outer state adjusters come into communities making false promises.
