Hi from CNN. This is Madeline Thompson with five things you need to know for Monday, January 6th.

I do believe very strongly that America's democracy is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it.

And today, America's democracy stood.

That's Vice President Kamala Harris, speaking today after certifying the results of the

2024 presidential election.

It's pretty rare that a sitting vice president gets their party's presidential nomination,

only to lose the election and have to oversee the counting of the electoral votes certifying

their own loss.

Only three other vice presidents have endured this indignity,

all in extremely contentious circumstances. After the certification, Harris met with

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in the capital, according to a source.

Thousands of LGBTQ plus veterans discharged for their sexuality under the Don't Ask, don't Tell policy,

have reached a potentially historic legal settlement with the Pentagon.

If the agreement is finalized in court, they could soon have an easier path to accessing

more benefits for their service.

Affected veterans also wouldn't have to go through a formal Board of Corrections process

in order to remove discriminatory sexual orientation indicators in their files.
