Summary

Hosts David Gass and Josh Schneider-Weiler go in-depth on all things transfer, and share some of their favorite transfers of all time. Why are agents so prevalent? How do buy-out clauses differ from release clauses (and what are both of those things)? When are fees paid? All those questions answered, plus Gass saying "amortization" roughly 10 times.

The Soccer 101 theme (and plenty of other excellent music) can be found right here: https://aerialist.bandcamp.com.

We're going to be subbing in for your normal crew today. So yes, substitute teachers are here. You can get up, walk around, do whatever you want, yell at each other because our opinions don't matter. And it doesn't affect your final grade. Just kidding. This is going to be a fantastic episode. And we're going to have a lot of fun. We're going to walk through what a transfer is in the world of soccer, how it works, why it's so complicated.

And then at the end of the show, we're going to do something new and talk through a few of our

1:29.9

the player's original contract from the original club that he is being bought from. And generally,

1:36.8

this is not the case in Europe. So this is a pretty big distinction, you know, where the player's

1:43.1

old contract is terminatedinated and then they go about

1:46.2

negotiating a new one with their club. So there are multiple negotiations going on at the same time

1:53.3

and we will get into that shortly. So let's start at the beginning. A team scouting network,

1:59.2

group of analysts, or maybe an outside agent

2:02.4

and intermediary identify potential players. While scouting analytics have come a long way,

2:08.7

you'd actually be surprised at the amount of players that are still presented by agents to their

2:13.5

clubs. If a player is under contract with one team, then the other side needs to pay a
