Summary

This week we are hanging out again with our Swedish dog training buddies, Emelie and Eva, of Carpe Momentum. And we are talking about the importance of defining, building, and maintaining our reinforcement procedures. During our conversation, Eva shares something that gets her a little worked up when she's talking about training. Of course, since these guys are the authors of the book Agility Right From the Start, the initial examples that we discuss are agility-focused but don't worry because the principles are totally applicable to good training in general. And we do get into other examples of these concepts as we dig in. We also talk about: • What we mean by reinforcement procedures, as well as why they are important. • Why it might be a problem if your dog develops a habit of LEAVING your reinforcement procedure (which you might call it a game), but leaving it before you are ready to begin the next rep. • What happens when you interrupt a trained sequence of behaviors, and why that can't be your primary training strategy. Spoiler alert: It all keeps circling back to how important those clean training loops are too efficient and effective learning. But I won't give you any more spoilers, you'll just have to listen for yourself. For full show notes, visit: www.wonderpupstraining.com/podcast/56

Hey guys, welcome to episode number 56 of drinking from the toilet.

0:19.2

I'm your host, Hannah Branigan. This is the first episode in a

0:23.3

series where we're going to talk all about reinforcement, strategies for reinforcement, event markers,

0:28.8

all that jazz, everything to do with reinforcing behavior. Since reinforcement drives behavior,

0:33.6

this is probably one of the most important general topics for us to spend time on. So we're going to

0:38.2

keep circling back to this. I don't think we can spend too much time talking about reinforcement.

0:42.6

Pretty much everything about our dog training hinges on our ability to use reinforcement effectively.

0:48.2

So what do we need to know? And super quick reminder, if you're listening to this episode,

0:53.5

the week that it comes out,

0:54.6

which is the first week in May, my mentorship program, Zero to CD, is currently open for

1:00.0

enrollment for a couple more days. This is the program that helps you connect all the dots

1:05.0

that you need to get ready to compete for your first obedience title, your novice-level obedience

1:10.5

title. Taking you step by

1:12.0

step through teaching the skills all the way up to varying reinforcement, building confidence,

1:17.0

and preparing for the ring. Soop to nuts. So no obedience experience whatsoever is actually

1:23.1

required, but you will want to have a solid foundation in clicker training skills like shaping and targeting

1:28.2

already on board to get the most out of the program. So if you are an experienced clicker trainer

1:32.9

who is a little obedience curious, this might be something you want to check out.

1:37.6

Enrollment will close on May 7th or when all the spots are filled, whichever comes first.

1:42.0

And usually we don't make it to the end of the enrollment period before the spots fill when I've opened this before. So maybe don't wait around

1:48.8

too long. For more information, you can go to 0.cd.com, and that's spelled out, Z-E-R-O-T-O-Letter-C,

1:57.4

letter-D, dot com. Or you can get there from my website, wonderpups training.com. So this week, we are
