0:00.0 | Welcome to the Happiness Podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. One of the many things that I love to do is teach people how to meditate. I've been doing it for decades. And the one thing I've found fairly recurrent throughout all these years is that when I teach |
0:22.6 | someone new to meditate, they're so surprised by how active their minds are. And then other people |
0:28.5 | tell me, Dr. Puff, my mind's going all the time. How can I possibly learn how to meditate? |
0:35.1 | Today we're going to explore the truth that we can't simply put a |
0:38.5 | roadblock to all our thoughts, but we can learn the crucial skills of deciding which thoughts |
0:44.8 | get our energy and how long they stick around by choosing not to feed them. So what is the basic |
0:51.2 | nature of our thoughts? Our brain's job is to think. It is constantly processing, |
0:57.6 | predicting, making associations, and doing a lot of things to help us navigate life. It's perfectly |
1:04.1 | normal for thoughts, random thoughts, pleasant, unpleasant, weird thoughts to pop up uninvited |
1:10.4 | throughout our day. It's not a sign of weakness |
1:13.0 | or a lack of mental control. And we're not going to find a switch that says, I'm going to turn |
1:18.6 | off these thoughts for the next half an hour. Even an expert meditator will have random thoughts |
1:23.4 | coming up during their time that they're meditating. The common misconception and common desire |
1:29.6 | is to eliminate unwanted thoughts because often we don't like them. They can make us upset, |
1:36.2 | angry, sad, or worried. For example, let's say you watch the news periodically and you keep hearing |
1:43.4 | about people losing their jobs. |
1:45.4 | You have a secure job. It's a good job and doesn't seem like you're going to lose your job, |
1:50.1 | but these worrying thoughts about, what if I get fired? What if I lose my job? What will I do? Keep popping up. |
1:58.0 | But I want to introduce a very crucial shift that we're going to talk about today in depth. |
2:03.1 | It's the realization that real control isn't about preventing thoughts. It's about managing our |
2:09.8 | relationship and reaction to them once they arrive. What we tend to do that gets us in trouble |
2:15.9 | is once they do arrive, we feed them. |
