Summary

Wouldn't it be helpful to have straightforward nutrition and lifestyle advice for enhancing fertility? And to know what to avoid that may hinder your ability to get pregnant? Lily Nichols offers just what you're looking for on today's podcast. Lily is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and the author of Real Food for Fertility.

Today, she goes over her recommended macro and micronutrient ratios for a healthier body (i.e. home for a baby) and what to do to have higher sperm and egg quality (so you can improve your chances of carrying the baby to term). Lily covers food, of course, but also lifestyle choices that we may not have realized impact our fertility (like our intake of alcohol, caffeine, and also our stress levels).

our shift to modern ultra-process foods is just a travesty for fertility. These foods generally

0:07.7

have been so processed that they really don't have much in the way of micronutrients,

0:13.4

meaning vitamins and minerals. Oftentimes they're pretty much concentrated sources of refined

0:19.1

carbohydrates and sugar. So refined grains, you know,

0:22.1

corn syrup, whatnot, you're not really getting any nutrition with it. Or they're made with

0:26.6

these low quality industrialized oils, these seed oils, which have replaced the traditional

0:31.6

animal fats that we used to rely on as really our primary source of fat. And so when that happens, we end up with a situation of typically overnourishment in terms

0:41.9

of calories, like excess energy, but low nutrient density.

0:47.4

And this just wreaks havoc on our overall health.

0:50.4

It disregulates our blood sugar, which disregulates our insulin levels.

0:55.1

Insulin levels have a direct effect on our reproductive hormones. You start lacking certain

1:00.0

micronutrients that are key for your thyroid to function properly. Your metabolic health is

1:05.0

compromised. Your mitochondria don't work as well. So your cell's ability to even make energy is compromised, and that's

1:12.8

really huge for both egg and sperm quality.
