Hey everyone, welcome to Paint Shade with Erin Martin, the podcast where we talk about reality

0:20.2

TV and we get a little bit culty. Well, I am going to get a lot bit culty today because

0:26.1

I have Michelle Likowski from the Jenny McCarthy show and the great fantastic, wonderful podcast,

0:33.2

never tell your stories, which she just started recently. I have her with me to talk about

0:39.0

Jonestown and American Tragedy. It was a short documentary or it was a short date line episode

0:44.4

actually that was on in mid-July and I've linked it up to the Facebook page but if you search

0:48.8

Jonestown and American Tragedy you can find it linked up pretty much everywhere and you can

0:54.2

watch it from any device. You don't need to go to your TV to find it on demand. Daintlined it a

0:59.1

really, really interesting job of covering the Jonestown tragedy in a new and interesting way.

1:06.1

Now many of you might have known before the story that went on with the congressmen and the

1:11.7

reporters who went down to Jonestown and actually, you know, pretty much came under attack,

1:18.1

let's say. We're going to get more into more detail as we cover it together in my conversation

1:22.9

with Michelle but they came under attack and several of them were actually murdered and it's

1:28.9

sparked then what Jim Jones would call the mass suicide, which I would term a mass murder of his

1:36.8

followers resulting in over 900 deaths, 300 of whom were tragically children. This happened in 1978

1:45.1

and incidentally this happened, I want to say, six to eight months after my own parents left our

1:52.8

cult, the co-boo, the Church of Bible understanding. And if you listen to my first few podcasts, you hear

1:59.6

my story about that, how my parents joined this group. Of course they didn't know it was a

2:04.5

cult, they didn't call it a cult, they just thought it was a religious group and they lived

2:08.2

communally much like Jonestown, although they didn't live in another country and thank God nothing

2:13.6

tragic like that ever occurred and never occurred to the two its people after they left either.

2:19.5

However, the leader was equally as nuts as they all are, as all cult leaders are, equally as
