Summary

HOW TO MAKE RBI PLURAL: Baseball season has started, so it’s a good time to answer questions from listeners who have asked how to make an abbreviation such as "RBI" plural. PRINCIPAL OR PRINCIPLE? Today we’re going to recall that the principal is indeed your “pal,” but we’ll also see that a principal can be so much more. In this episode we’ll talk about the various ways to use “principle”—that’s “p-l-e”—and “principal”—that’s “p-a-l.” RUN OF THE MILL. Why we say "run of the mill" instead of "run of the mine" or "run of the kiln." other such abbreviations.

0:14.6

A meaty middle about the difference between principle that ends with P-A-L and principle

0:19.9

but the boys of summer are on the field too.

Baseball season has started, so it's a good time to answer questions from listeners who've

0:47.7

asked about how to make an abbreviation such as RBI plural.

0:52.9

It can be confusing since it's the R part run that's becoming plural in Run's bad

0:58.3

adan.

0:59.3

Should it be RSBI or RBI's or something else?

1:05.4

Even though it doesn't make absolute logical sense, you make initialisms in acronyms plural

1:10.4

by adding an S to the end, no matter what part would be plural if you wrote the whole thing

1:14.7

out.

1:15.7

So even though it would be Run's bad adan, you write it as RBIS, RBI's.

1:22.3

In the past, some publications used apostrophes to make acronyms and initialisms plural.

1:28.2

So until a few years ago, it was common to see something like RBI apostrophias or CD apostrophias

1:35.5

for RBI's and CDs in the New York Times.

1:39.6

But today, all major publications and style guides that I'm aware of recommend simply adding

1:45.3

an S without the apostrophe.
