Welcome to the Lucas Rockwood show. I'm your host, I'm a yoga teacher, a teacher trainer. I'm the

0:07.2

father of three kids, but first and foremost, I'm a student. I like to learn things. So I go

0:11.5

into the world and usually on this podcast, I bring on experts in meditation, wellness diet,

0:17.4

nutrition, medical doctors, therapists, and everyone in between. On this week's show, I will be

0:22.0

doing a Q&A episode we haven't done one in over a year. In case you don't know, I get about

0:28.7

somewhere between 70 and 100 questions per week. And I answered just one of them on the podcast.

0:34.9

So most of these Q&A's I answer privately. Today I'm choosing about a dozen different questions

0:40.8

that I'm choosing from one person, but these are very similar questions I've gotten from many people

0:45.5

in the past two to three months. So I hope that they will be relevant to many of you.

0:49.6

Most of them are in and around yoga, movement, injuries, and nutrition. If none of that is of interest,

0:55.5

feel free to skip to next week's show. Okay, let's get into it. First question is from Josh.

1:01.2

Josh writes, can you explain the mechanism behind relaxing the pelvic floor?

1:07.2

In hatha yoga practices, there is this somewhat elusive esoteric region often referred to as mula

1:15.6

bunda. And it doesn't actually need to be as complex as yoga people make it. But essentially,

1:21.6

if you were to take a cross section of the human body and kind of look down into the pelvic bowl,

1:27.3

like if you imagine your pelvis was a soup bowl, at the base of your pelvis there, there's a group of

1:33.3

muscles that serve as your what's referred to as your pelvic floor, your pelvic diaphragm,

1:40.4

or sometimes, yeah, mula bunda in yoga. And essentially, these are muscles that control things like

1:46.4

urination, your bowels. They serve as kind of the flower pot base for the soft tissue base of your

1:53.8

bony pelvis. And they're really important. What are they important for? Sexual function,

1:59.2

they're important for incontinence, they're important for your posture, and a number of other

2:04.2

things, which Josh is referring to is something called a hypertonic pelvic floor. It's pretty rare.
