Summary

PREVIEW. Return to Escalation: Monitoring China's Promise to Purchase American Soybeans. Jack Burnham discusses the muted respect/ceasefire between President Trump and General Secretary Xi Jinping following their meeting in Seoul. Burnham suggests a return to escalation is likely, similar to past talks, if either side perceives a competitive step. A critical trigger point to monitor is China's fulfillment of promises to purchase American agricultural commodities, such as soybeans.

General Secretary Xi Jinping. There looks to be a muted respect for each other in some fashion perhaps just a ceasefire however

what happens afterwards is jack to talk about what happens in ceasefires that do not solve the

problem of confrontation much more of this tonight. Jack Burnham.

I think there likely will be a return escalation. I think we've seen, you know, from talks in London, in Madrid, in Geneva, all of these previous talks of there's a form of a ceasefire or a deal or the framework of a deal. And then typically down the road, two,

1:04.3

three, four months later, either Washington or Beijing takes a step that the other perceives to be competitive or in violation of the spirit of the agreement. And then you see a return to

escalation. What the trigger may be

1:12.2

in this particular case, I think, remains to be seen. I think particularly want something to watch

1:17.7

is the United States, China promise to purchase soybeans. This is a promise they've made before.

1:24.8

This was a promise they made under the first Trump administration in the phase one trade deal. And this is something that President Trump clearly cares a lot about.

1:32.9

And I think it's a space to watch is, does China hold up its promises around purchasing

1:38.8

American agriculture commodities? Historically, they've made significant promises and then

1:43.4

failed to fulfill them. I think it may be a similar, it may be a similar case here in which China doesn't live up to its promised expectations of purchasing American products, which then draws President Trump's ire.
