Summary

For too long, many Christians have heard and believed the misconception that living in God’s freedom and redemption means they’ll never struggle with sin or temptation. This is one of the things the Bible is pretty clear on. The heroes of the faith like Paul, David, Moses, and Abraham loved and new God and still lived imperfectly.

Maybe it’s time for us to recognize that being saved doesn’t mean we’ll never sin again, but that it means we’re on a journey of loving Jesus, pursuing Him, falling short and returning to Him.

This week’s podcast guest, Lina Abujamra, knows this well. She joins Juli to talk about what it looks like to spend a lifetime struggling with lust and sexual temptation, and still choose Jesus.

Hey friend, welcome to Job with Julie. This podcast is hosted by me, Julie Slattery, and it is an outreach of authentic intimacy, which is a ministry dedicated to helping people make sense of God and sexuality. All right, we're going to dive deep. Let me ask you a personal question. Do you ever feel like you have to hide your sexual sin and struggle?

0:22.8

And maybe that's because you think that if you're a Christian, you're not supposed to battle lust

0:27.1

or a sexual temptation and certainly not fall into sin. And so that shame keeps you in a place of

0:32.8

hiding and trying to pretend like you have it altogether, when really you are desperate for a safe

0:39.0

and authentic community.

0:40.8

Well, if that's you, here's some truth you need to know.

0:44.5

Being saved doesn't mean that you're never going to make mistakes or you will stop

0:48.7

needing God's mercy, grace, and redemption.

0:51.6

You just look at the lives of people like the Apostle Paul, who loved God,

0:55.7

was totally dedicated to him, but he writes about experiencing an ongoing thorn in his flesh.

1:02.1

Or how about David, who obviously loved God? He wrote Psalm after Psalm pouring out his worship to him,

1:08.2

but he still fell into sexual sin and experienced some pretty

1:12.2

severe consequences of that. So that makes us ask, what does it look like to love Jesus,

1:18.6

to want to pursue him, but be in the midst of a struggle, perhaps, with sexual sin? What does it

1:24.6

look like to need to go back to him again and again for redemption and forgiveness?

1:29.9

Well, my guest this week is ER doctor, author, and teacher Lena Abu Jammra, who has spent

1:36.3

most of her adult life battling lust and sexual struggles. We're going to talk about her

1:41.5

latest book called Don't Tell Anyone You're Reading This.

1:45.2

It's about all the things that Lena used to be afraid that people would find out about her until she learned the freedom of actually just being honest with her struggles.

1:54.8

You know, all of us are going to have to pursue and cultivate a right understanding of godly sexuality.

2:00.5

And then we're going to have to fight to walk it out.

2:02.9

And Lena explains this so well.
