Bernadette Lim, MD, MS (she/her) founded Freedom Community Clinic at age 24. Growing up in a family with Filipino and Toisanese ancestral roots that faced trauma in the Western medical system, she wanted to become the first physician in her family and use ancestral, holistic healing methods. Inspired by her experiences and the rich history of healing justice activism in the Bay Area, Bernadette created Freedom Community Clinic to uplift ancestral science and wisdom and expand on historical legacies of bringing whole-person healing back to the people.

Bernadette graduated from UCSF School of Medicine in 2022 and earned her master’s degree at UC Berkeley School of Public Health in 2019. She serves as faculty at the San Francisco State Institute for Holistic Health Studies. In addition, she is a hatha yoga teacher and Reiki healing practitioner. She graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 2016 and was a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar to India. She has been honored as an Echoing Green Fellow, Dalai Lama Fellow, World Policy Forum Young Global Changer, National Minority Quality Forum 40 Under 40 Leader in Minority Health, Yamashita Prize Outstanding Emerging Social Activist in California, and a Pacific Standard Top 30 Under 30 Thinker in Policy and Social Justice, among many others.

0:07.2	I met Bernie at a youth mental health summit that was being hosted by the California
0:11.2	Endowment and the US Surgeon General's office. She was speaking on a panel and I was so impressed
0:17.3	by the work she's doing and what she has created that I immediately jumped at the chance to
0:22.3	meet her and find out more. Bernie is an MD, but left the standard medical track to pursue healing
0:28.8	that was more holistic and inclusive. Inspired by her experiences and the rich history of
0:34.6	healing justice activism in the Bay Area, she created Freedom Community Clinic to uplift
0:41.2	ancestral science and wisdom and expand on historical legacies of bringing whole person healing
0:47.6	back to the people and all at the age of 24. Bernie is, ancestral a Filipino and
0:55.3	toysanese powerhouse who has taken decisive action to spread healing as a form of freedom,
1:02.0	especially to those in her community who may not have always been treated with respect or
1:06.6	fully acknowledged by the Western medical complex or who may not have had access to medical services.
1:14.2	And beyond Western medical services, the clinic provides other types of ancestral-based healing
1:19.3	modalities such as bodywork, raky yoga, breathwork, and much more. Bernie herself is a yoga
1:26.4	teacher and raky healer as well. The clinic started out mobile and has since grown to include
1:32.8	three brick and mortar spaces on top of the mobile units that still travel to different areas
1:37.8	and schools offering services. Freedom Community Clinic has also become a first responder at schools
1:44.0	and crisis situations in her area. Ever growing and evolving, Bernie perfectly emulates the idea
1:50.7	of being like water as she flows, expands, contracts, and makes waves of healing goodness wherever
