Hey, everyone. Emily Abadi here. You are listening to Five Minute Friday from Hurtle. I heard a really good

0:28.5

analogy yesterday and I want to share it with all of you. The analogy is there is, let's say, a dingy old car that you keep in your parking spot.

0:44.4

And you keep the car there because it's not really doing anything bad to you.

0:52.2

But you just don't feel motivated to move it. It's just, it is how it is.

1:00.3

Meanwhile, as this dingy old car is sitting in the parking spot, your dream car, let's call it a rangerover shall we? Your range rover is circling right around your parking lot.

1:18.4

And it cannot stop. It cannot park because there's nowhere for it to go.

1:25.8

So you know what happens when you take the initiative and you move the dingy

1:31.5

car out from the parking spot that you've just been letting sit there, been letting, you've just

1:38.9

allowed to sit there for so long? Well, suddenly, your dream car now has a place to go. I was told this story in the

1:50.7

context of dating, to be clear, but I know and believe that this metaphor can be so applicable

1:59.6

to so many things in life. And I want to bring it

2:04.2

around to habit formation. Because oftentimes there are practices, things that we are doing in

2:11.4

our life that don't really serve us, but we do them. We execute that way. We just go about things with that habit in place

2:22.5

because we don't want to exercise the energy to implement something new that could be better for

2:29.9

us. I will give you an example. Let's say right now you have a morning routine that you like to sit on the

2:38.9

couch and watch the news for an hour. And this is something that you have done for years. Morning TV is

2:45.5

a comfort zone for you. As much as I can appreciate that, what if you were willing to remove yourself from

2:55.6

this comfortable environment for a week or two and try something different? And then you open

3:02.7

yourself to the positivity that can come with mixing up your routine. Maybe you're now taking a walk and

3:10.2

listening to a morning podcast instead of sitting on the couch and watching television. Man,

3:17.4

I mean, bring this to working out in general. Think about that saying nothing changes if nothing
